Communication is one of the most frustrating aspects of our personal and professional relationships. Whether its having others not understanding what
we are trying to tell them, or us not understanding what we are being told, miscommunication has become very common.

This session is designed to reduce misunderstandings, contention, and hard feelings using superior communication skills based on message clarity and
listener interpretation. Participants learn practical ways to improve the communication process. Once you understand these easy to apply techniques,
you will be on your way to spending your time building, not repairing, relationships.

Topics
We cover real communication situations you face on a regular basis, including parent-teacher conferences, report card comments, and general parent
contact. Here is what we cover:

How miscommunication is born – going beyond simply admitting miscommunication exists, we will look at the roots of misunderstanding and
how it enters into all forms of communication.
Distinguishing between perceptions and viewpoints – understanding the paradigms through which people filter all communication.
The reality of face to face communication – revealing the many elements and factors that comprise communication, when face-to-face
communication is essential, and when written communication has advantages.
One way and two way communication – role play and interactive lecture will clearly create an understanding of these types of communication
while interactive lecture and real-life examples will clearly define when each is advantageous.
Listening skills – enlightening aspects of one of the greatest communication skills: not talking. Included are active listening steps, and an
assessment of current listening skills
Actual classroom challenges – through group discussion we will look at real problems and how to apply this material to handle those situations.
